Touriga Franca 2016. Structure and elegance in the Lisbon terroir
28 DECEMBER 2019
Quinta de Dom Carlos, in Alenquer. In the Atlantic terroir that defines the Lisbon Wine Region, the higher temperature variations favour the maturation of red grapes. Thanks to a partnership of almost a decade, some of the harvests that have integrated various lots of red wines at AdegaMãe come from there.
A plot of Touriga Franca goes unnoticed. Finally, in the 2016 harvest, AdegaMãe’s oenologists discover it and insist on producing the wine in order to assess its evolution in the cellar. The result is extremely interesting: the extraordinary grape variety, originally from the Douro region, crucial in Port wines and Douro DOC, has such a high quality that it must be bottled as a varietal wine and even integrate the lot of emblematic Reserve wines of the house. And so, a new single grape variety wine is born, the AdegaMãe Touriga Franca 2016, as well as a new Dory Reserve 2016, the brightest stars in the range of wines which AdegaMãe now launches onto the market.
“Backbone of the Port wines and of many Douro DOCs, Touriga Franca is much more than a batch grape variety, with some excellent examples of varietal wines in the country, and with this very particular expression in our Lisbon terroir, which really surprised us. Our best tribute to the way it stood out in the harvest and of how it evolved in the cellar, was to bottle it as a varietal wine. But we were so excited that we went even further, incorporating it into the batch of our Dory Reserve,” says Diogo Lopes.
“We have a wine with structure but, at the same time, balanced with the acidity granted to it by our Atlantic terroir. The velvety tannins emerge, and the end result is one of great elegance,” continues Diogo Lopes, about AdegaMãe Touriga Franca 2016. Regarding the new Dory Reserve Red 2016, the new batch integrates four grape varieties (namely Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot). “We continue to take consistent steps in the evolution of a red wine that is already a reference of the Lisbon Region, merging complexity, elegance and freshness. It is a modern, greedy and rather gastronomic wine,” he says.
At the same time, AdegaMãe also launches new editions of the varietal wines Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Merlot, 2015 harvests, one of the best harvests in the history of AdegaMãe. Here is the new range of AdegaMãe red wines, in detail:
